Higher-Level and Distance Learning in Prison

Unlocking the potential of higher-level learning for learners offers them a wider range of opportunities after release.

By enhancing skills and knowledge, individuals can better compete for jobs, boosting their confidence and self-belief, and opening new paths for their future.

Why higher-level learning matters

We want our learners to have access to comprehensive education, supporting their aspirations and individual learning goals.

Our dedicated team of tutors inspires learners to see the value of distance learning and higher-level studies, which can lead to greater employment opportunities and a brighter future.

Collaboration with leading educational partners

We collaborate with leading partners in higher education and distance learning, such as the Open University, Prisoners’ Education Trust, and local colleges and universities.

This collaboration ensures our programmes are up-to-date and provide learners with the essential skills needed for the right job opportunities.

Digital learning in prisons

We’ve invested in upgrading the digital infrastructure of our 43 Prison Education Framework (PEF) establishments.

This digital transformation project aims to create a modern, digitalised learning environment, improving access to distance learning and expanding opportunities for our learners.

The benefits of distance learning for prisoners

Flexibility

Distance learning offers prisoners the advantage of studying at their own pace, accommodating their individual schedules and routines.

This flexibility enables learners to balance their educational pursuits with other aspects of prison life, making it easier to integrate learning into their daily activities.

Accessibility

Recent digital upgrades have significantly improved the accessibility of educational materials.

Enhanced technological resources ensure that prisoners can easily access course content, participate in online discussions, and submit assignments, creating a more seamless and interactive learning experience.

Support systems

Support systems are integral to the success of distance learning provisions. Dedicated tutors and strong partnerships with educational institutions provide essential guidance and encouragement.

This network of support helps learners navigate their studies effectively, address any challenges they may face, and stay motivated throughout their educational journey.

Claire’s graduation proves anything is possible

Claire has proved that a custodial sentence is no barrier to achievement and change after graduating with a Humanities Degree from the Open University while at HMP/YOI Low Newton. Her academic achievement is not just a personal triumph but a sign of hope for many.

Supported by a dedicated team of education professionals, prison staff, and her Open University tutor, Jon Stoddard, Claire's story highlights the critical role of a supportive network in overcoming obstacles. The encouragement and resources provided by these individuals were pivotal in her success.

As the first student from HMP/YOI Low Newton to have graduated with an OU degree, Claire’s graduation has not only marked a significant milestone in her own life but has also had a ripple effect within the prison community.

Her success has inspired numerous fellow inmates to consider and embark on their own educational journeys, illustrating how education can offer a pathway to a more positive and empowered future.

Her story stands as a powerful example of how distance learning can facilitate personal growth and change, even under challenging circumstances. By achieving her degree, Claire has demonstrated that with determination and the right support, significant academic and personal goals are within reach for everyone, regardless of their situation.
