Support

Novus provides a range of specialist support services designed to ensure that everyone enjoys an equal opportunity to benefit from education, training and employment.

Over 40% of children in custody have learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD). Our aim is to empower children with special educational needs (SEN) and LDD to engage, enjoy and make progress in learning in custody, and prepare them to continue to make progress when they return to their communities.

Our highly skilled, trained and experienced colleagues work with care and commitment to provide support and guidance to all children through supportive learning programmes, accessible learning environments and adapted curriculum materials. These include personalised delivery methods, learning aids and adaptations, mind-mapping and phonetic spell-checkers, and providing accessible environments to meet the diverse needs of a wide range of children.

Novus Engagement and Resettlement teams provide pastoral support working with the children from the point they arrive on site. They help improve their confidence, motivation and wellbeing, so they feel comfortable accessing education. They continue to play an integral role throughout their time in custody, supporting them through to resettlement into education, training or employment on release, or supporting their transition into the adult prison estate, once they turn 18.

HMYOI Werrington retain BDA Quality Mark Award

The Novus team at HMYOI Werrington have played an integral role in the establishment retaining the coveted British Dyslexia Association Quality Mark Award for another three years.

The YOI first obtained the award in 2016 and the retention is testament to the continued commitment to supporting dyslexic learners within the establishment.

HMYOI Werrington is the only prison in the country to have achieved the award, and it is a result of the commitment made to support dyslexic learners by all partners within the establishment, including the Novus education department.
