Finding employment after release is an important factor in reducing reoffending. Studies show that ex-offenders who find a job after release are up to 9% less likely to reoffend.

Education is incredibly important in finding employment after release but with as many as 46% of prisoners having no academic qualifications, it is vital that whilst they're in prison we give them the opportunities and education needed to thrive in society.

This is why at Novus we support our learners both in prison education and seeking employment upon release to help reduce the risk of reoffending.

Novus provides prison education

As an organisation, we have worked with thousands of offenders with the intention of reducing reoffending. In order to support our learners, we provide them with the education and opportunities necessary to help equip them for a life outside of prison.

Education in prisons has many benefits:

  • Improved employment prospects
  • Reduce reoffending
  • Increased rehabilitation
  • Positive impact on the community

We provide our learners with many different educational routes and opportunities so that they can choose their own pathway and tailor education in a way that works best for them.

Novus rebuilds a good relationship with education

Education is a key component in finding employment however, many learners either have no experience or negative experiences of education and therefore don't believe in the potential of learning. This is why it is important to support our learners in building positive relationships with education in order for them to take part.

At Novus, we have specialist teams of educators who work towards planning lessons to help rebuild a good connection and respect for education.

Novus provides vocational subjects

Vocational courses are educational and training opportunities that provide learners with practical skills in various trades. Programmes like these can help learners secure employment, support themselves financially and reduce the risk of reoffending.

At Novus, we recognise how important it is for our learners to access vocational training so that they can gain the relevant qualifications and skills needed for their chosen career path.

We provide a variety of vocational courses such as: Hair and Beauty, Bricklaying and Hospitality where learners work towards nationally recognised qualifications. We also work with external partners providing learners real opportunities for work, apprenticeships, and training on release.

We work with employers to create employer-led vocational training programmes that are designed to meet the needs of the industry so our learners and their future employers can be confident they are gaining relevant skills in their chosen career.

Novus provides support with the job application process

We understand finding a job upon release is difficult, so we provide learners with the support and guidance needed during the employment process. We connect learners to the right job role and provide support on CVs, job applications and interview preparation.
