Using art and enrichment to raise awareness around extinction and conservation
Adult Provision Arts & Enrichment

Learners from HMP Risley and HMP Thorn Cross recently entered a collection of artwork for the ‘Sketch for survival’ art competition. The competition gave them the opportunity to enter an international exhibition to showcase drawings and paintings related to conservation.
What is Sketch for Survival?
The ‘Sketch for survival’ competition helps to raise awareness about species extinction and conservation whilst also raising funds for projects around the world. The international competition is open to everyone and showcases a range of different art styles and unites the voices of people all around the world in support of conservation.
Engaging learners in world-wide initiatives
Learners at HMP Risley and HMP Thorn Cross entered a collection of artwork based on different animals that are endangered or at risk. If successful the artwork will form part of the exhibition in London and Edinburgh, with 100 pieces of artwork selected. The creative pieces will then enter an auction with all proceeds going toward the ‘Sketch for survival’ project fund. The outcomes will also be brought together to form one collective outcome that will be displayed at each establishment.
Entering different competitions such as the Explorers Against Extinction-Sketch for Survival positively benefits learners, as it supports the development of the individual’s confidence, interpersonal skills, presentation, self-management, and critical thinking skills.
Community Opportunities project at HMP Hindley
Learners at HMP Hindley also took part in a project called ‘Community Opportunities’. The wider work from HMP Hindley included the Arts Techniques class watching tutorials from artists and taking influence from their style. Learners used difference objects from the workshop to create interesting textured backgrounds, they then painted on top of their textured backgrounds to create animal portraits.
Through the workshop learners received well-rounded and inclusive learning experiences, giving them the opportunity to develop their cultural knowledge as well as enhancing their personal and social development skills. By using found materials in the theme, learners have gained knowledge of how different artists work and ultimately it encouraged and inspired them to be creative in new and different ways.
Projects and competitions like ‘Community Ties’ and ‘Sketch for survival’ not only help learners improve their creative skills, they also give learners the opportunity to contribute to a global cause like conservation, fostering a sense of meaning and a sense of purpose. Involvement in global movements, creates a sense of connectedness to their community which can positively benefit their reintegration into society post-release.
Through research and creative engagement, learners across HMPs Risley, Thorn Cross and Hindley have gained knowledge about global issues and by exploring these complex topics through art, it encourages critical reflection on human impact and interconnectedness with nature as well as enhancing skills in teamwork, communication and critical thinking.
