Utilising Triptico in the maths provision at HMP Berwyn
Adult Provision Digital

The maths department at HMP Berwyn have been utilising digital tools in their education delivery to further engage learners in maths. One of the dedicated maths teachers worked collaboratively with our onsite digital colleague and David from Triptico to create the teacher’s interactive maths game on Triptico!
The maths teacher had originally developed the interactive maths game using PowerPoint however, due to embedded features being blocked for security reasons, she had to come up with a new way to run the activity in class.
Working with Triptico to create a new maths game for learners
Determined to bring her idea to life, the maths teacher contacted our onsite digital colleague who then reached out to David, the creator of Triptico to see if something similar could be developed on the platform. Incredibly, within just 24 hours, David had turned the concept into a brand-new feature!
The activity created is called ‘Number challenge’ and is a fast-paced, interactive maths game designed to test students’ mental arithmetic and problem-solving skills. Players are presented with a target number and a set of digits – their challenge is to use basic maths skills i.e., add, subtract, multiply, and divide to reach the target as quickly and as accurately as possible. The game works brilliantly for individuals, small-groups or whole-class participation and can be used as a starter activity, revision tool, or energising brain break. It encourages mathematical thinking, sharpens calculation skills, and brings a fun, competitive edge to lessons.
Countdown-style maths games don’t just build numeracy skills, they also help to build essential employability skills like teamwork, digital literacy, decision-making, and adaptability in a fun, accessible way.
Hannah, the maths teacher who requested the activity spoke positively about working with Triptico to further develop her original resource:
“Whilst trying to create a resource for my learners I encountered many security issues however, I got in touch with our onsite digital colleague to assist me with finding a way or an alternative way to get the resource working. I was very lucky that Triptico offered to create something for me, I gave the parameters I wanted for the resource. About a week later they had created 'Number Challenge'.
This is a resource I now use daily either as a starter or ender activity for my class. It really helps develop the learner’s mental arithmetic and can be used as an alternate assessment tool. I've found that the learners really enjoy it, and they enjoy the learning through play.”
A maths learner who has used the new game, has spoken positively about their experiences of using it:
I really like this game; it's not often I am good at maths things, but this has helped me get better. I also like trying to beat my high score or one of my friends score, the more I keep practising the better my score gets.
By working collaboratively with Triptico, the team at HMP Berwyn were able to create a brand-new game based on Hannahs original idea, creating a further resource to help learners develop their maths skills.
