A group of five staff members stand together in a classroom at HMP Brinsford. Three people are wearing white chef coats, with one person holding a yellow promotional poster.

Learners at HMP Brinsford recently took part in the Greene King Unlocking Hospitality 2026 Master Chef Challenge, an inspiring event designed to showcase culinary talent, build confidence and create meaningful pathways into employment.

Delivered through a collaboration between Greene King and Novus including the prison employment leads and hospitality tutors, the challenge gave learners the opportunity to demonstrate the creativity, professionalism and passion that employers are looking for in the hospitality industry.

For many learners, it was the first time they had been able to showcase their skills directly to a national employer. Through the support of Greene King colleagues and the dedication of HMP Brinsford's hospitality team, learners were able to gain valuable feedback, build their confidence and demonstrate their potential in a professional setting.

The Challenge

Candidates were given 60 minutes to prepare and present a dish of their choice, drawing on the skills and knowledge they have developed through their hospitality training.

Throughout the challenge, Greene King colleagues engaged with participants, discussing:

  • Their inspiration behind the dish
  • Cooking techniques and methods
  • Career aspirations
  • Previous hospitality experience
  • Future ambitions and employment goals

These conversations gave learners the chance to demonstrate not only their culinary skills but also their passion, motivation and readiness for employment opportunities beyond custody.

Judging and Feedback

Once the cooking was complete, each candidate presented their dish to a judging panel.

Entries were assessed against a range of criteria, including:

  • Creativity
  • Presentation
  • Taste
  • Menu suitability
  • Professional approach

Constructive feedback and encouragement were provided to every participant, ensuring that the experience was both supportive and developmental.

Creating Opportunities for the Future

The Master Chef Challenge was about much more than cooking. It celebrated achievement, recognised talent and highlighted the positive impact that partnerships between education providers and employers can have in creating routes into sustainable employment.

The event demonstrated the value of bringing employers into prison education environments, giving learners the opportunity to showcase their abilities, explore career pathways and engage directly with industry professionals. Through collaboration between Greene King and the education team at HMP Brinsford, the challenge helped unlock talent, build confidence and create opportunities that can support successful resettlement and brighter futures.
