Therapy dog visit to promote learning and wellbeing at HMP Five Wells
Adult Provision Arts & Enrichment

Recently, a Novus entry-level English teacher at HMP Five Wells, Hannah took a creative and impactful approach to engaging learners in English, using the unique presence of Maya, a Therapy Dog at the prison.
Hannah planned a series of three lessons centred around Maya, the Pekingese, to promote both learning and wellbeing. The aim of the lessons was to improve wellbeing, promote a love for animals and to incorporate G4S’s use of pet therapy dogs into the curriculum.
Engaging learners in English at HMP Five Wells
The first lesson began with Maya’s visit, where learners had the opportunity to meet her and her handler, setting the tone for a calm and positive atmosphere.
The lessons themselves focused on descriptive writing, adjectives, speaking and listening skills, reading comprehension, and even a fun spelling test using dog-related words. Learners had to interview Maya’s handler and discuss their thoughts in group conversations, fostering communication and teamwork.
The impact on the learners was profound. Maya's calming presence helped create a safe and inviting space, encouraging vulnerability and collaboration. Engagement levels were high, and the learners were visibly inspired.
The lessons were a huge success with learners producing work of a much higher level than expected, thanks to the inspiration drawn from Mayas visit. The learners are also eager for Maya to return so that they can showcase their work to both her and the handler.
Creative innovation to engage learners in education
Hannah’s innovative approach proves how creative lesson planning and thinking outside the box can not only enhance learning but also foster a positive and supportive environment for learners in prison education.
The benefits of Animal Assisted Therapies have been studied and results can range from improvement in general health and wellbeing, increased confidence and improved communication skills. The therapy dog visit enabled learners to further engage in our English provision and produce high-quality work as well as having a positive impact on their wellbeing, through group discussions, socialisation and fostering a calm and positive classroom atmosphere.
