Stafford Soundwave Brings Music and Community Together at HMP Stafford
Adult Provision
A successful collaboration between Novus and the Learning and Skills team at HMP Stafford brought music, community and fundraising together for Stafford Soundwave this summer. Designed to celebrate the power of music to connect people, the event united learners, staff and supporters for a day of live performances, fundraising activities and shared experiences.
Held in July and themed "Bridging Boundaries Through Music", Stafford Soundwave showcased the creativity, dedication and talent developing across the prison community. The event provided learners with the opportunity to share their musical skills with a wider audience, while highlighting the positive role that arts and education can play in building confidence, encouraging self-expression and strengthening relationships.
Organised by Novus alongside the Learning and Skills team, the day also offered an opportunity to recognise the achievements of those involved in music programmes at HMP Stafford. Bringing together learners, staff and supporters in a positive and inclusive environment, the event demonstrated how creative initiatives can inspire personal growth and foster a strong sense of community.
Bringing People Together Through Music
The event's entertainment was led by the Jail Arts Music Society (JAMS), whose performers delivered more than four hours of live music. Audiences enjoyed a diverse setlist featuring well-known classics and contemporary favourites, creating an atmosphere of celebration throughout the day.
One attendee reflected on the experience, saying:
I don't imagine there are many prisons where you not only get to learn an instrument but have the chance to perform in front of 200 people at a festival. What a great day, thank you!
Alongside the music, attendees were able to support the event through merchandise sales and fundraising activities, helping to raise money for Choir with No Name, a charity that supports people who have experienced homelessness.
A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a cheque for £1,176.70 to a representative from the charity, demonstrating the collective impact of everyone involved in making the event a success.
Reflecting on the day, one attendee said:
It was an amazing collaborative event, bringing together members of the community through a shared love of music.
Another added:
Prisoners and Officers came together through the joys of music. Such a fantastic atmosphere for all who attended.
