Novus and Manufacturers Alliance Champion Prison Leaver Employment
Novus Works Partner
Yesterday, Novus hosted an employer engagement event at Thorn Cross Prison in partnership with the prison and the Manufacturers Alliance, focused on changing perceptions of prison leavers and promoting employment opportunities during sentence on Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL) and after release.
The event brought together employers, partners and education specialists to explore how prisons, education providers and industry can work together to create sustainable pathways into work.
Bringing Employers Inside the Prison Education Environment
Attendees included representatives from Belmont Packaging Ltd, Carrs Pasties Ltd, City & Guilds, Closomat Ltd, DOORCO Ltd, Preston Technical Ltd and the Manufacturers Alliance, alongside colleagues from HMPPS, Novus, LTE Group and MOL.
Guests were given the opportunity to see first hand the learning and work environments at Thorn Cross, including education spaces, workshops and vocational areas. These visits highlighted how learners develop industry-relevant skills, qualifications and workplace behaviours that prepare them for employment on release.
Honest Conversations That Challenge Perceptions
A key part of the afternoon was an open Q and A session with two currently serving prisoners. Employers were able to ask questions directly and hear personal experiences of education, training and aspirations for employment.
These honest conversations helped challenge stereotypes and demonstrated the motivation many individuals have to secure meaningful work and build positive futures.
The Impact of Employment on Reducing Reoffending
Employment is a proven factor in reducing reoffending and supporting rehabilitation. Ministry of Justice data shows that people who secure employment after release are up to nine percentage points less likely to reoffend than those who remain unemployed.
While fewer than one in three prison leavers are in employment six months after release, this figure has improved significantly in recent years as employer engagement and education pathways have strengthened.
By offering opportunities during sentence or on release, employers play a vital role in reducing reoffending, strengthening communities and addressing skills shortages.
Working With Novus to Create Inclusive Employment Pathways
Novus continues to work closely with prison colleagues and employers to support inclusive recruitment and help businesses access a motivated and resilient talent pool. Events like this are a key step in building understanding, confidence and long-term partnerships.
