COVID-19 UPDATE 07.01.2021

COVID-19 and national restrictions meant we needed to quickly respond to a new way of delivery in prison education. Our teams have worked tirelessly to create workbooks and provide new ways of working so that we can continue to support our learners with access to education to enable them to achieve the best outcome they can.

We are working closely with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and Youth Custody Service (YCS) to create a COVID-safe programme of learning that has the health and safety of our learners and colleagues at its heart, just as other education settings are doing across the country. Health and safety is an area of critical importance to us and our central Group COVID team has been in continuous operation since the beginning of the pandemic managing and monitoring all risks and issues rigorously and consistently.

Novus has been shortlisted in two categories in this year’s Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) Awards.

Abigail Johnstone, Novus Employment and Resettlement Coordinator in the London region, is a finalist in the Frontline Advisor of the Year category, which recognises an employment adviser who has demonstrated exceptional commitment in a frontline role. In her role, Abigail supports prisoners who are coming to the end of their sentence, or who have recently been released, into employment. She works across eight category B and C male prisons in London, liaising with HMPPS, prisoners, employers and partners providing support services.

Novus has been shortlisted in the Offender Related Services Provider category. This new award category for 2020 recognises an employment services provider who has demonstrated exceptional commitment in delivering services for individuals who have been in contact with the Criminal Justice System.

Speaking about the awards, ERSA Chief Executive Elizabeth Taylor said:

“Now more so than ever, it is important to shine the spotlight on the amazing organisations and people that work to make the UK employment support sector the dynamic and effective force for good that it is. The positive influence and impact our shortlisters have on individuals and wider communities is something to celebrate, especially in current circumstances. Thank you to everyone who took time to submit an entry or sponsor an award and I wish the best of luck to all of our shortlisted nominees.”

The winners of the ERSA Employability Awards 2020 will be announced on Wednesday 22 July, 5pm-7pm via an online video conference.
