A Former Novus Cambria Learner’s Journey: From HMP Berwyn to Hotel Success

At Novus, we see every day how determination and the right support can transform lives. This former learner’s journey from HMP Berwyn to becoming a valued member of a hotel team in South Wales demonstrates the impact of resilience and opportunity.

Building the Foundations

Whilst at HMP Berwyn, the learner was enrolled in hospitality training delivered by Novus Cambria in partnership with The Right Course. His commitment was clear from the start; focused, driven, and determined to build a better future beyond prison.

Through dedicated training and support from our educators, he developed both the skills and mindset needed to succeed. Ahead of his release, the learner was introduced to Todd, Lead Recruitment Manager at Marston’s PLC, who was immediately impressed by his attitude and readiness to work.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

A few months later, Todd contacted us with a job opportunity, a commis chef position at a hotel in South Wales, including live-in accommodation.

After speaking with the hotel’s General Manager, the learner was offered the role on the same day. Relocating from Manchester was a significant decision. With encouragement from his parents and ongoing support from Novus and The Right Course, he agreed to visit the site. The connection was immediate with the hotel, the team, and the local community and he decided to take the leap.

To ease his transition, The Right Course covered travel expenses and provided weekly support calls to ensure he settled in well. Early on, the founder and trustee of The Right Course, Fred Sirieix, personally checked in with words of encouragement to support him as he started this new chapter.

Rising to the Challenge

Not long after joining, he stepped up to lead the kitchen when the head chef left unexpectedly. He met the challenge with maturity and focus, steadily growing in confidence and culinary skill.

Today, he is a key member of the hotel team, respected for his leadership and commitment. His journey highlights what can be achieved through resilience, hard work, and embracing new opportunities the very values Novus strives to foster every day.
