More Than Teaching: Celebrating Our Teachers This World Teachers' Day
Adult Provision Youth Provision
World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to recognise the dedication, expertise and commitment of teachers around the world. At Novus, it is a chance to celebrate the difference our teaching colleagues make every day, helping learners develop skills, build confidence and work towards positive futures.
The impact of teaching can be seen in many different ways, from learners achieving qualifications and developing new skills to discovering new interests, building self-belief and preparing for life beyond custody. The stories below highlight just some of the ways our teachers support learners across the Novus network.
Building Foundations for Learning
Our teachers help learners develop the essential skills needed for education, employment and everyday life. Through patience, encouragement and tailored support, they help learners build confidence and achieve progress in literacy, English and maths.
Across the North-East region, teachers helped learners engage with reading and writing through a creative programme led by poet and author Mike Garry. Delivered as part of the Year of Reading campaign, the initiative encouraged learners to develop their literacy skills, build confidence and express themselves through poetry, storytelling and creative writing. The sessions generated exceptional levels of engagement, with many learners reporting a renewed interest in reading and a greater belief in their own abilities.
Inspiring Creativity and Engagement
Through creative and enriching learning experiences, teaching colleagues encourage curiosity, participation and self-expression, helping learners discover new interests, develop confidence and engage positively with education.
At HMYOI Wetherby, teachers used creative learning to help learners develop confidence, literacy skills and self-expression through the international We Youth project and a music workshop led by artist Nick Shahlavi. By exploring themes such as identity, aspirations and culture through art, music and discussion, learners were encouraged to engage with education in new ways while developing valuable communication, creative thinking and participation skills. The activities demonstrated how creative learning can inspire engagement, broaden perspectives and help learners recognise their potential.
Developing Digital Skills
As technology continues to shape the way we live and work, teaching colleagues play a vital role in helping learners develop the digital skills needed to navigate an increasingly digital world. At the same time, they remain committed to their own professional development, embracing new technologies and innovative approaches that enhance teaching, engage learners and ensure education remains relevant in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
At HMP Hatfield, teachers and Learning Support Practitioners took part in AI-focused CPD sessions designed to enhance teaching and learning. Using TeacherMatic, colleagues explored new ways to create lesson plans, learning resources and classroom activities, helping them save time, increase creativity and improve learner engagement. The initiative highlights how ongoing professional development helps teachers embrace innovation and continue delivering engaging, high-quality education.
Developing Vocational Skills
Our teachers help learners gain practical skills, industry knowledge and recognised qualifications across a range of vocational areas. Through hands-on learning and expert guidance, they support learners to develop confidence in their abilities and achieve meaningful progress.
At HMP Hewell and HMP Stoke Heath, learners developed industry-relevant skills through construction training and vocational qualifications designed to prepare them for careers in the sector. Building on this foundation, two former learners secured employment with Gorilla Scaffolding after release, demonstrating how vocational education can equip learners with the skills, confidence and opportunities needed to progress into sustainable employment.
Preparing Learners for Employment
Preparing learners for the world of work is a key part of the role teaching colleagues play across Novus. From developing employability skills to preparing for progression opportunities, they support learners to take positive steps towards their future goals.
At HMP Wymott and HMP Kirkham, learners were given the opportunity to connect directly with employers and explore pathways into employment through dedicated jobs and careers events. Delivered through collaboration between Novus Works, prison colleagues and employer partners, the events enabled learners to gain valuable careers advice, build professional connections and learn about opportunities available on release. By bringing education and employment together, these initiatives helped learners take positive steps towards sustainable employment and successful resettlement.
Working with Employer Partners
Our teachers work closely with employer partners to help learners understand industry expectations, develop workplace skills and explore future career opportunities. By connecting learning with real-world experiences, they help learners gain valuable insights and prepare for progression beyond custody.
At HMP Styal, teachers worked alongside employer partner The Glamour Garage to deliver an innovative employability programme for Hair and Beauty learners. Combining industry expertise with practical employability training, the programme helped learners develop workplace skills, build confidence and explore opportunities for employment and self-employment. The initiative has already delivered positive outcomes, with one learner securing employment ahead of their release and others gaining valuable skills and experience to support their future careers.
Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
Creating opportunities for every learner to succeed is at the heart of what our teaching colleagues do. By adapting their approach and providing individual support, they help learners overcome barriers and achieve their potential.
At HMP Rye Hill, their dedicated Neurodiversity Hub demonstrates the importance of inclusive education. Working alongside specialist support teams, teachers help neurodiverse learners access tailored support, build confidence and overcome barriers to learning, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to achieve their potential.
