Magic Box Cooking Event at HMP Wealstun

In November, the Novus team at HMP Wealstun hosted a magic box cooking event for Novus colleagues during a rare opportunity of a prison shut down. The aim of the event was to foster team cohesion whilst showcasing the creativity of colleagues.

Showcasing creativity amongst Novus colleagues

Four teams, each consisting of four colleagues, including a Hub Manager were given 90 minutes to design, prepare, cook and serve a three-course meal using a variety of ingredients revealed only at the start of the competition.

The event was organised by Novus on-site caterers Andrew and Anthony with the aim of testing the creativity and culinary skills of colleagues. Ingredients included butternut squash, fish, chicken, a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables and a selection of basic condiments and essentials, we would have in our kitchens at home.

Each team had 10 minutes to choose their ingredients and plan their dishes before spending the remaining 80 minutes preparing, cooking and serving their dishes. The dishes, inspired by the participants personal life, experiences and cultures included a jerk chicken stew, an assortment of Asian dishes, a butternut squash fondue, roasted pepper and feta tartlets, a winter fruit crumble, an apple meringue tart, a vegetarian curry and a creme caramel.

To add to the challenge, each of the teams were given one two-ring electric hob and had to share an air fryer, microwave and a small oven.

The value of team events

Events like this are integral to building relationships, teamwork and communication skills amongst colleagues in a relaxed, creative environment. Utilising shut down days for staff training, meetings and team-building activities are invaluable for colleagues personal and professional development.

The winners of the cook-off were the team who made the baked apple dish, all were impressed with the simple yet heartwarming dish reminiscent of a staple winter pudding from the 70s and 80s.

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to bring colleagues together, providing opportunities for them to develop both personally and professionally. To keep up to date with projects and events, take a look at the news section on our website.
