COVID-19 UPDATE 07.01.2021

COVID-19 and national restrictions meant we needed to quickly respond to a new way of delivery in prison education. Our teams have worked tirelessly to create workbooks and provide new ways of working so that we can continue to support our learners with access to education to enable them to achieve the best outcome they can.

We are working closely with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and Youth Custody Service (YCS) to create a COVID-safe programme of learning that has the health and safety of our learners and colleagues at its heart, just as other education settings are doing across the country. Health and safety is an area of critical importance to us and our central Group COVID team has been in continuous operation since the beginning of the pandemic managing and monitoring all risks and issues rigorously and consistently.

Liz Truss, the Secretary of State for Justice

Liz Truss, the Secretary of State for Justice, has visited HMP Thameside to tour the Novus education facilities.

The MP for South West Norfolk spent more than two hours at the London prison, during which time she met with a number of Novus colleagues and learners.

Ms Truss started her tour in the print workshop before heading to one of the ESOL classrooms, where learners were studying English and Maths at ESOL level.

The next stage of the visit took in a Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2 class, prior to a trip to the library, where book clubs regularly feature appearances by guest authors.

A question and answer session with Novus colleagues and prison staff concluded the tour.

Pam Fricker, Novus Education Manager at HMP Thameside, said: “It was a very positive visit and I am delighted that the Secretary of State for Justice was able to see so many different elements of our provision.”
