'Inspired Inside' exhibition showcasing artwork from HMP Styal learners
Adult Provision Arts & Enrichment
Yesterday afternoon, the launch event of a new exhibition 'Inspired Inside' was held at The University of Salford, showcasing artwork produced by learners in the art class at HMP Styal. The exhibition is running from 19th-30th August, showcasing artwork from HMP Styal learners, to highlight the human side of female prisoners as well as trying to break down some of the stigmas surrounding women in prison.
Art classes at HMP Styal
The art classes at HMP Styal are predominantly self-led with Novus tutor Catherine, offering technical and creative direction when needed. This classroom culture helps to facilitate wider discussions around art but also justice, society and our place in it. It gives an opportunity for topics to be discussed that help form the rehabilitative journey of many of the learners.
Learners who participate in the art classes use their skills to send crafts home to their children and families, maintaining relationships during separation. Whilst in prison, learners knit, bake, garden, and create in prison workshops, channelling their creativity and using positive creative outlets to express themselves.
The Exhibition
The exhibition offered learners a space to showcase their talents, providing a sense of validation and accomplishment, which can be a powerful motivator for personal growth and inspire learners to continue working hard towards their rehabilitative journey.
Through the exhibition, learners had the unique opportunity to educate attendees through their art, on the realities of prison and the potential for positive change, helping to challenge stereotypes around prison, arts and enrichment in prison and rehabilitation.
The exhibition has been a huge success thanks to the hard work of Novus art tutor Catherine, learners from the art class and the wider staff at HMP Styal.
Participating in events and projects like this are extremely important to a learner's rehabilitative journey. Not only are they able to express themselves in a positive way, but they also have the opportunity to share their experiences and insights of prison with the wider community and breakdown stereotypes.
