How Rehabilitation Can Reduce Recidivism

At Novus, we believe that education is a powerful tool in breaking the cycle of reoffending and rebuilding lives. In the UK, recidivism, otherwise known as reoffending, poses a significant challenge to communities, the criminal justice system, and to the individuals. However, through effective rehabilitation, particularly education, we can significantly reduce the recidivism rates and foster a safer, more inclusive society.

Understanding recidivism and its impact

Recidivism otherwise known as reoffending, refers to the tendency of a previously convicted individual to reoffend after they have been released from custody or completed their sentence. In the UK, recidivism is often measured by the rate at which offenders are reconvicted within a specific time period, typically one or two years following their release.

Recidivism remains a persistent issue across the UK, with statistics showing that a significant proportion of prison leavers end up reoffending within a few years. This cycle not only affects public safety but also places enormous financial and emotional strain on families and public services. Addressing the root causes of reoffending is essential in tackling this problem head-on.

The role of rehabilitation in reducing recidivism

Rehabilitation is key to reducing reoffending. At Novus, our education programmes are designed to equip learners with essential skills, qualifications, and confidence that open doors to new opportunities post-release. By offering courses ranging from basic literacy and numeracy to vocational training and personal development, we help individuals build the foundations for a law-abiding, productive life.

Education fosters self-esteem, critical thinking, and a sense of purpose, all vital factors in preventing reoffending. Research consistently shows that individuals who engage in educational programmes are significantly less likely to reoffend. Through our tailored approach, we not only teach but also support each learner’s unique journey towards rehabilitation.

Empowering learners through prison education

At Novus we provide prison education, training and support services to equip learners with the skills and qualifications needed to be successfully rehabilitated.

Technical skills development

At Novus, we offer a diverse and flexible curriculum designed to meet the unique needs of every learner within the prison education system. Our programmes provide individuals with the opportunity to earn relevant qualifications and build the critical skills required to secure employment and successfully reintegrate into society upon release.

Through targeted education, learners can address skill gaps and boost their confidence, empowering them to re-enter their communities as well-rounded individuals ready to contribute positively.

While our course offerings vary by location to reflect regional demands, we consistently deliver core subjects that are essential for rehabilitation, including English, maths, digital skills, vocational and technical training, and creative enrichment.

Soft skills development

While technical skills are crucial for securing employment after release, it is equally important for learners to develop soft skills such as communication and teamwork to ensure successful reintegration into society.

Employment goes beyond qualifications and technical expertise; long-term success in the workplace also depends on transferable skills that enhance collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability.

At Novus, we recognise the vital role soft skills play in rehabilitation. That’s why we offer a range of education courses, training sessions, and workshops specifically designed to foster these essential personal and interpersonal abilities.

Employment support

Successful rehabilitation relies heavily on securing employment after release. However, ex-offenders often face significant challenges in accessing job opportunities, including the stigma of a criminal record, limited education and qualifications, lack of employment support, and untreated mental health issues.

At Novus, we are committed to breaking down these barriers by equipping learners with the necessary skills and resources to find meaningful employment and smoothly reintegrate into society.

Beyond our education programmes, we provide dedicated employment support through our Novus Works Team, Partner Employers, and collaboration with Prison Employment Leads. Our experienced staff offer comprehensive assistance to help learners develop the skills needed to find, apply for, and secure jobs.

Successful rehabilitation through collaboration at HMP Kirkham

A former HMP Kirkham learner secured employment, housing, and financial support after release thanks to collaborative efforts by Novus, CAS2 housing, Only a Pavement Away, and Greene King. This successful outcome highlights the importance of partnership and tailored support in helping prison leavers reintegrate and reduce reoffending.

Reducing recidivism is not just about punishment; it’s about opportunity, growth, and transformation. Novus stands at the forefront of this mission, harnessing the power of education to change lives behind bars and beyond. Together, we can break the cycle of reoffending and build a brighter, more hopeful future for all.
