We are pleased to announce that HMP Haverigg have received a ‘Good’ overall rating in their recent HMIP report, recognising that learners “benefitted from calm and respectful environments across all education, skills and work activities”.

Congratulations to everyone at HMP Haverigg, it’s a real collaborative effort from Novus, HMPPS colleagues and other supporting organisations and is making a significant difference to learner outcomes.

Implementing the reading strategy across curriculum

Our reading strategy is a main focus across Novus establishments, with colleagues implementing the strategy across the whole education provision, to provide more opportunities for learners to enjoy the benefits of reading.

It was great to see Ofsted acknowledge the hard work that Novus colleagues are putting in to implement the reading strategy at HMP Haverigg in their report:

Leaders had implemented an effective reading strategy across the prison

“Leaders worked closely with Shannon Trust to help non and low-level readers develop a love of reading”

“Most prisoners made significant progress in developing their reading skills. Their new skills helped many to move from not being able to read to achieving qualifications that they had not thought possible, such as entry 3 in functional skills English”

Developing the digital skills of learners

In the report, Ofsted made positive comments regarding our digital provision at Haverigg . At Novus we are dedicated to ensure that all learners are equipped with the essential digital skills needed upon release and we work hard to implement our digital strategy across our whole curriculum offer.

Most prisoners used the Virtual Campus (VC) frequently

“Leaders had recently doubled the number of university and distance-learning places to around 40. Prisoners on these programmes had specific times available when they could use the VC exclusively for their studies, other prisoners had regular access for activities such as job searches”

It is crucial that learners gain the relevant skills and knowledge necessary in digital, so that they’re not at a digital disadvantage upon release. Through the regular use of digital resources and access to the Virtual Campus, learners at HMP Haverigg are able to develop the skills needed in digital, that will be vital to navigate daily life and find employment opportunities upon release.

Providing quality education to help learners achieve their qualifications

Ofsted also made positive comments focusing on the education and personal development curriculums and how they helped learners achieve their qualifications.

Novus provided relevant education and personal development curriculums. These covered core subjects such as English, mathematics and digital skills, as well as art, customer service life skills and money management

“Teachers used a range of assessment strategies effectively to identify gaps in learning and to consolidate what prisoners knew and could do”

“They used quizzes, activities and worksheets to ensure that prisoners developed a secure understanding of topics and could remember the new knowledge they learned. A high proportion of prisoners achieved their qualification”

Providing an excellent quality curriculum and education provision is our top priority, and at HMP Haverigg, Novus colleagues have not only been able to provide this but have also implemented strategies and new activities to ensure learners are retaining the information they’re learning, positively contributing to them achieving their qualifications. Our Novus colleagues at Haverigg continue to work hard to support learners in education and help them achieve the skills and qualifications needed to thrive in society.

Well done to all colleagues for the fantastic outcome and continued dedication and hard work to support learners in education.
