Engaging learners in the wider curriculum at HMP Durham
Adult Provision Arts & Enrichment

At Novus we are always looking for new and innovative ways to incorporate creative enrichment into our wider curriculum offer, so that more learners can engage in education. Recently, learners at HMP Durham have had the opportunity to take part in lessons centred around National Biscuit Day, where they took part in creative enrichment activities in line with the months theme.
Incorporating creative themes across the curriculum at HMP Durham
In May, learners at HMP Durham took part in themed activities to celebrate national biscuit day as part of a whole-department initiative. Each subject area explored creative ways to connect the theme to their curriculum.
In maths, learners examined biscuit-related concepts such as ratios, cost comparisons and weight conversions. Multi-skills learners took a more reflective and creative approach to the theme. They explored stereotypes in the construction industry, discussing the phrase ‘take the biscuit’ in relation to breaktimes which sparked meaningful conversations about work ethic. Learners then collaborated on a biscuit-themed display, incorporating woodwork, painting and design skills.
To further celebrate the theme, learners were also treated to tea or coffee and a biscuit during breaktime.
Events like these allow Novus colleagues to incorporate creative enrichment into their curriculum offer, further engaging learners in education as well as giving them the opportunity to develop their existing knowledge and skills. The activities also enabled learners to communicate and work collaboratively with peers, further enhancing their communication and teamworking skills.
By providing projects like this, learners are able to develop their skills in education and interpersonal skills such as teamwork and communication, positively contributing to a learners personal development and helping them to become well-rounded individuals before release.
