Building a new future through education at HMP Isis and beyond
Adult Provision

At Novus, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. One of our recent HMP Isis learners, is a shining example of how purposeful learning and strong partnership working can lead to lasting, positive change.
The learner first engaged with Novus when he enrolled on the Painting and Decorating course, whilst serving his sentence at HMP Isis. From the outset, he showed commitment, focus, and a clear determination to make the most of his time in custody. He completed the course to a high standard, achieving his qualification, but his journey didn’t stop at a single qualification.
He went on to take part in a wide range of learning, development, and mentoring opportunities offered through Novus and our partners. His activities whilst at HMP Isis included:
• City & Guilds Painting & Decorating Level 1
• Rail Track Employment Hub
• Bible Study
• RIFT Business Start-Up
• Property Investing
• Inside Job employability course
• Employment Mentor
• Shannon Trust Mentor
• CIWM Waste Management
• Hub Orderly
• Men of Purpose
This broad engagement in education, highlighted the learners drive to grow, both personally and professionally. He didn't just focus on gaining qualifications he also gave back, supporting others as a mentor with the Shannon Trust and as an employment mentor.
Working with Bounce Back to find employment opportunities and training upon release
Upon release, the learner continued his journey by connecting with Bounce Back in the community, a charity and social enterprise in the UK dedicated to supporting individuals with a history of offending, both inside and after leaving prison, supporting prison leavers into employment. During this time, he completed both the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) and Traffic Marshal courses through Bounce Back, showing the same strong work ethic and positive attitude that he demonstrated throughout his time with Novus, with one CSCS trainer commenting:
I’ve never smiled so much coming out of a training room.
That joy speaks volumes about the impact the learner had, not just on the work, but on the people around him.
When he visited the Bounce Back training centre, he was proud to see a photo of the decorating work he had completed during his time at Isis displayed on the wall. He added his signature and a personal quote a powerful reminder of how far he has come.
The former learner’s journey from a Novus classroom to community employment training is a clear example of what’s possible when education, rehabilitation, and support are joined up and learner centred.
