Breaking Barriers: A Special Graduation Story from HMP Stafford and The Open University
Adult Provision

Tuesday 29th July 2025, marked a profound moment of celebration, reflection and pride within the walls of HMP Stafford. In a truly inspiring ceremony, the High Sheriff of Staffordshire, alongside staff from the Open University, governors, prison staff, fellow prisoners, and family members, gathered to honour an extraordinary achievement, the completion of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Maths by a Novus learner.
The graduate started his initial degree journey 19 years ago, but it was during an education induction session at HMP Stafford that he was encouraged to finally complete his studies. In recognition of this achievement, the education manager, Nicola Randles organised a graduation ceremony that mirrored the dignity and formality of those held beyond the prison gates. Complete with gown and cap, flowers picked from the prison gardens and cakes baked by hospitality learners, this special event recognised and celebrated his incredible hard work, determination, perseverance and resilience. The emotional atmosphere was palpable. A standing ovation greeted the awarding of the degree, a moment that spoke volumes about the impact of inclusive education programmes within prison settings.
The ceremony was more than just an academic celebration. It was a testament to second chances, the power of education, and the human potential for growth and transformation. It also spotlighted the exceptional work of the Open University in delivering accessible education to learners everywhere including those in custody.
The graduation ceremony was a huge success with learners who attended commenting positively on the day:
“I thought it was great that they got the hospitality learners involved, and that the whole prison embraced the event. It was a very special afternoon, particularly with his family and friends present.”
“Being a STEM student myself it is inspiring, as much as it is daunting, to be involved in this fantastic event celebrating the success of a fellow student. The graduate has been an aide and an inspiration during my time here, especially whilst on my OU course. One day I hope to be in the same position as him, which likely would not have happened without his influence.”
The graduate also commented positively about his experience:
“I would just like to say thank you to the education and OU staff for accommodating and supporting me to finish my degree. The ceremony was completely unexpected, and I am very grateful to those that made it happen and allowing my family to share this moment with me.”
This extraordinary event would not have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of so many. To everyone who contributed thank you and to our graduate, congratulations on this incredible milestone.
