Teacher's career pathway in prison education

Teacher

Our teachers cover the subjects that Novus are contracted to teach within each prison establishment. The range of subjects taught varies from prison to prison, but will always include maths and English. Most Novus prisons also have vocational subject provision (which will vary depending on the local employment needs of the area).

To teach in prison you would need to have a teaching qualification (or be prepared to work towards one) and an in-depth knowledge of the subject that you are teaching.

Curriculum Managers are the equivalent of subject or department leads in mainstream education. As a Hub or Curriculum Manager, you are responsible and accountable for daily running, managing, and delivering of curriculum areas within an establishment, working directly with the Local Education Manager and the prison Governor’s representatives.

This role will be the first-line manager for delivery colleagues within the prison.

Local Education Manager

Local Education Managers are the lead Novus person in each prison. They manage and coordinate education delivery, including overall management of the Novus team. Education Managers work closely with the prison governor and leadership team to support and manage the education budget for that site.

The role ensures that the quality of delivery is maintained, with accountability for driving excellence in teaching and learning. They are responsible for ensuring strategic, cohesive, and sequential working with other services, providers, and organisations working within the prison.

The role includes working with the regional teams within HMPPS, ensuring that contract obligations are being met and that quality of delivery remains high across the Lot.
